Around the Granite State: Tuesday’s Roundup

The Hollis Brookline High School girls volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday, and the 350th win of coach Becky Balfour’s career, by sweeping Keene.

The Cavaliers won by scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-12, getting 12 kills from Maddie Norris and 11 kills from Elizabeth Atkinson. Kyra Belson added seven aces and Maren Anderson had two blocks, while Sammie Sheppard had nine digs.

HB plays at Manchester Memorial (0-2) on Friday, while Keene (0-2) heads home to host Manchester Central (0-1).

Bishop Guertin 3, Exeter 0

The Cardinals picked up the win over the Blue Hawks by scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-17.

Bishop Guertin got eight kills and 15 digs from Mariana Gomez, while Paola Matos added 20 digs and three aces. Julie Pascucci also had 14 assists, eight digs and five aces.

For Exeter, Syd Johnson had seven kills while Sam Wiberg had 12 assists and Kelsey Peirce chipped in with 15 digs.

“BG was simply the better team (Tuesday),” Exeter coach Michael McDonnell said of the loss. “They controlled the ball well and were very consistent on offense. They were disciplined and we were not. While it was a disappointing start to our season, we know we have more to give. I think it’s fair to say they didn’t catch us at our best, if our preseason was any indicator of our potential.”

Londonderry 3, Goffstown 2

The Grizzlies bounced back from a loss in the first game to win the next two, but the Lancers rallied for the win. Game scores were 25-15, 20-25, 15-25, 25-16 and 15-10.

Bailey Gagnon had 25 assists for Goffstown while Justine Watterson and Bridget Kennerson combined for 12 digs. As a team, the Grizzlies recorded 22 aces.

Field Hockey

Bishop Guertin 1, Dover 0

Sarah Coyle scored with a little more than five minutes left in regulation to give the Cardinals (3-0) the win over the Green Wave.

McKenna Gosselin assisted on the goal and Makena Leazer (eight saves) made a couple of saves in the final moments to keep Dover off the board.

Caroline Carey, Britney Pearson and Alyson Pollard played well defensively for Bishop Guertin, while Emily Foltan and Priscilla Bibeau were solid in the midfield.

Pinkerton 3, Nashua South 0

The Panthers fell to 0-2 in Division I with the loss against the Astros at Stellos Stadium. Paige Murphy made 15 saves for South, while Emma Lynch, Vanessa Norton, Abbey Rowe, Josephine Coehlo and Hannah Hansen also played well.

Boys Soccer

Souhegan 2, Milford 0

The Sabers scored twice in the first half to pick up the win over the Spartans and improve to 3-1 in Division II.

Linus Werner scored off an assist from Ryan Hickey in the sixth minute to give Souhegan the lead. Jacob Hopfenspirger added another score in the 23rd minute to make it 2-0.

Matt Greany made five saves for the Sabers, while Milford’s Ryan Chase had 12 saves.
