Around the Granite State: Exeter field hockey beats Bishop Guertin to advance
Here are results from Tuesday’s Division I field hockey preliminary round.
Dani Caron scored on a penalty corner late in the first half and the Exeter High School field hockey team was able to hold off Bishop Guertin for a 1-0 win in Tuesday’s Division I preliminary round.
Caron took the insert from teammate Lizzie DeLello and fired a shot at the goal. The ball appeared to get redirected on the way in and gave the No. 8 Blue Hawks (10-7) the only score they’d need with 2:29 to play in the second quarter.
Amalia Gloss finished with nine saves in the win, including a couple with no time left, when the No. 9 Cardinals (8-9) had four penalty corners and a chance to send the game to overtime.
Bishop Guertin also had a great chance to tie with just under six minutes to play, when Kaylee Cruikshank got the ball past Exeter’s defense as teammate Olivia Kosterman chased it into the circle alone. But Gloss came out to kick the ball away, ending the threat.
Exeter ended up with 13 corners while Bishop Guertin had nine and Cardinals goalie Ayla Saeturn recorded seven saves.
The Blue Hawks move on to the quarterfinals and go on the road for a 3 p.m. start Friday at No. 1 Keene.
No. 11 Concord 1, No. 6 Dover 0 (3-2 shootout)
Lexi Magee scored on the Crimson Tide’s fifth attempt in the shootout and the Green Wave couldn’t answer it to give Concord the win in the D1 preliminary round.
Amy Desroches and Ella Chrabolowski also had a goal apiece in the shootout for the Crimson Tide (7-8-3), who will face No. 3 Londonderry on the road in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Hannah Deroy and Molly Angers had the shootout goals for Dover (10-5-2) and goalie Scarlett Gray made a stop on Concord’s first attempt.
The teams also played to a scoreless tie during the regular season, which means between the two games, Concord and Dover played a total of 160 minutes without scoring a goal.
No. 5 Pinkerton 2, No. 12 Windham 1
Cayden Madeiros and Jordyn Schreiber each had a goal for the Astros to help them advance past the Jaguars.
Molly Kuncik finished with eight saves for Pinkerton (13-4), which will play in the quarterfinals Friday at Winnacunnet.
Ayvree Hamilton and Fran Doyle played well for Pinkerton while Brynn McKenna had a complete game while serving as the fly on defensive penalty corners.
