Around the Granite State: Keene boys basketball outlasts Nashua South

NASHUA – Javon Massiah hit four 3-pointers but it was his transition dunk with 21 seconds left in double overtime  that was the difference as the Keene High School boys basketball defeated Nashua South 70-68 on Friday.

Massiah finished with 16 points while Fitch Hennessey scored all of his team-high 20 points after halftime for the Blackbirds (3-1 in Division I), who trailed by 13 points early in the third quarter. Kasen Abbott was also in double figures with 13 points, including three 3s, as Keene made 10 field goals from behind the line.

Josh Caruso had a game-high 41 points for the Panthers (3-1), with six 3s, and Josh Tripp added 11 points. Shane Lemire and Daniel Karavanic each had six points for South.

The Panthers went on a 19-3 run in the second quarter to take a 31-20 lead into halftime, and scored the first basket of the second half to go up 13 points. But the Blackbirds answered with a 12-0 run to cut the lead to one midway through the third.

South was able to keep the lead, but a 3 at the buzzer by Hennessey made it a three-point game and gave Keene momentum. That started a 13-4 run that gave the Blackbirds a 54-51 lead but a 3 and two free throws by Caruso eventually put the Panthers back up, 58-56.

A three-point play by Hennessey tied the game at 59 with 30.4 remaining, and the senior had a chance for the win when he stole the ball on an in-bounds play. But his layup wouldn’t go down and South grabbed the rebound, but a shot by Lemire caromed out, sending the game to overtime.

Massiah had a chance to give Keene the win at the end of the first overtime, but his 3-point attempt was no good. In the second overtime, after Rys Fontaine blocked a shot by South’s Ayden Clough, Massiah got out in transition for the game-winning dunk with 21.7 seconds to go.

Belmont 69, Campbell 50

The shorthanded Cougars dropped their first game of the year on the road against the Red Raiders.

Luke Delia led Campbell (3-1 in D3) with 20 points and Cayden DeLeon had 14 points. Matthew Haley added eight markers for the Cougars.

Girls Basketball

Souhegan 50, Coe-Brown 41

The Sabers jumped out to an early 19-5 lead, fought back to tie the game at halftime and pulled away in the fourth to beat the Bears.

Zofia Rosenfield led Souhegan (1-3) with a career-high 20 points while

Tess Jancar was also in double figures with 11 points, going 5 of 6 a the free throw line. Phoebe Faucher added nine points and Julia Skelton had seven.

Coe-Brown (2-2) got 12 points from Hannah Meehan while Emma LaPierre and Zoey Smith each had seven points.

Oyster River 80, Kingswood 39

The Bobcats hit 11 3-pointers in the second half to blow open a close game against the Knights.

Vivian O’Quinn had 28 points for Oyster River (3-1) and Olivia Andersen had 27 points. Wren Horne was also in double figures with 11 markers while Jazzy Alvarez and Ashling Ferris each had seven.

Pinkerton 58, Alvirne 39

Brooke Benz scored 21 points to help lead the Astros past the Broncos.

Sydney Gerossie added 15 points, including three 3s, for Pinkerton (4-0) and Mia Marshall was also in double figures with 13 points.

Exeter 84, Concord 42

Lexy Rogers had 20 points and six steals for the Blue Hawks in a win over the Crimson Tide.

Karli Scherpf added 15 points and six assists and Anna McGuiness also had 15 points. Emma Gillis was in double figures with 10 markers while Jess Melick had six points, eight rebounds and five steals for Exeter (2-2).

Windham 67, Spaulding 17

The Jaguars got out to a 22-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back against the Red Raiders.

Sarah Guarnaccia and Lilah Boucher (two 3s) each had 10 points while Meghan Husson added nine points. Grace Mondello and Avery Steffanides had eight points apiece for Windham (4-0).

Spaulding (0-4) got seven points from Meagan Uraskevich.

Salem 72, Manchester Memorial 21

Lily George scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Blue Devils to a win over the Crusaders.

George hit three 3-pointers while Lindsay Goetz added 11 points and Kyleigh Olivieri and Ella Mosto had eight points apiece for Salem (4-0)

Avery Jenkins had 12 points, including two 3s, to lead Memorial (0-4).

Keene 60, Nashua South 44

McKenna Nelson and Harper Zalanski each scored more than 20 points to lead the Blackbirds past the Panthers.

Nelson had 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Zalanski had 23 points, going 9 of 12 from the free throw line for Keene (3-1).

Nicole De Jesus led South (2-2) with 23 points and Karina O’Donnell added nine points.

Goffstown 49, Timberlane 40

The Grizzlies picked up their first win of the season, getting a road win over the Owls.

Meredith Winterburn had 14 points to lead Goffstown (1-3) while Jenna Shannon had 11 points and Morghan Dodge added nine markers.

Rylee Donohue led Timberlane (2-2) with 17 points.

Portsmouth 45, Winnacunnet 29

Kalia Roy scored 22 points to lead the Warriors (0-4), but it wasn’t enough against the Clippers.

Bridget Emery had 18 points to lead Portsmouth (3-1) and while Maggie Pataki added eight points.
