Around the Granite State: Merrimack girls lacrosse hangs on to beat Goffstown (video)

GOFFSTOWN – Riley Taylor scored six goals to help lead the Merrimack High School girls lacrosse team to a 12-10 win Wednesday over Goffstown.

Jackie Hayes added three goals and two assists and Ava Martin also scored twice for the Tomahawks (2-0 in D2). Payton Trepaney had a goal and an assist and Brooklynn Hilyard also had an assist.

Annabelle Cassetty made seven saves for Merrimack while Martin, Taylor and Trepaney were strong on the draw. Taylor also had four groundballs.

The Grizzlies (0-2) got three goals from Sydney Lavoie while Trinity Lunn and Peyton Duff each had two goals. Ella Colletti added a goal and an assist and Mia Brissette also scored.

Merrimack led 6-3 at the end of the first quarter and stretched it to 8-3 early in the second. Goffstown got back within three, 8-5, by halftime and trailed 10-7 at the end of three.

The Tomahawks went up 11-7 midway through the fourth, but the Grizzlies went on a 3-0 run in a span of 1:11 to make it 11-10 with 2:03 to play.

Trepaney scored off the ensuing draw to give Merrimack breathing room and the Tomahawks won the draw again to run out the clock.

No. 8 Nashua South 19, Salem 7

The Panthers picked up a win over the Blue Devils in the first athletic event held at Stellos Stadium in over six months.

Maren Lowell had six goals, including the 100th of her career, to go with an assist and eight draw controls. Saige Devins and Addie Borden each had three goals for South (1-0, No. 8 in the MerchSquared.com/NHHSSports Girls Lacrosse Coaches Poll).

Karina O’Donnell added two goals, an assist and four draw controls while Wylie Hart and Carly Benzekri also had two goals and an assist apiece. Nevaeh Eppolitto had a goal, two groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Lilee Petricca and Emma Herlihy split time in goal and combined for three saves while Lexi McGuire, Karina Santana, Nitzann Alkalay and Maddie Langer also played well for the Panthers.

Salem (0-2) got three goals from Katie Wood while Emily Young, Lily Burke, Nicole Ringdahl and Althea Shaefer added a goal apiece. Olivia Schoenrock played the first half and made seven saves while Zeynep Yildirim had two saves in the second half.

Timberlane 12, Kingswood 2

Eight players had at least a goal for the Owls as they opened their season with a win over the Knights.

Ella Lampron had two goals, one assist and seven draw controls for Timberlane (1-0) while Aubrey Fitzgerald, Julia Johnson and Mia Morrier added two goals apiece.

Lulu Trasatti had a goal and and an assist and Ella Watts had a goal and four ground balls. Ava Paul and Mackenzie Laschi also had a goal each.

Kayla Apitz finished with seven saves for the Owls while Ava Stewart, Emma Norcott, Sophie Doherty and Tatenda Chanakira played well.

No. 10 St. Thomas 19, Hopkinton 13

Talula Gregg scored six goals to lead the Saints to a season-opening win over the Hawks.

Charlotte DeTolla and Lizzy Holden each had five goals for St. Thomas while Kensley Harris, Ava Goodwin and Julia Bryan added a goal apiece.

Chloe Baker finished with six saves for the Saints and Ava Lyder played well defensively.

Hanover 16, Alvirne 4

Cadence Bice scored three goals for the Broncos, but it wasn’t enough in a loss to the Bears.

Olivia Baptista also scored for Alvirne while Fiona Duggan made nine saves and Nile Camacho played well on defense.

Boys Lacrosse

Goffstown 12, No. 7 St. Thomas 11 (OT)

Sean Burnett scored his only goal in overtime to give the Grizzlies a win over the Saints to open the season.

Burnett was also 12 of 15 on faceoffs while Sam Chapman had five goals and four assists for Goffstown. Bennett Morgan and Kai Tupper also had two goals apiece in the win.

Trevor Spofford and Noah Babin each had a goal and Isaac Robinson had an assist while Max Cote came up big for the Grizzlies late in the game.

No. 6 Derryfield 13, No. 8 Winnacunnet 7

The Cougars rallied from an early deficit to open their season with a win over the Warriors.

Dom Cercone led the way with five goals and an assist for Derryfield (1-0) while Brady Doldo had three goals and three assists and RJ Proulx scored three times.

Ryan Maxwell had a goal and three assists while Emerson Stover (one assist) and Garrett Lande also had a goal apiece.

Liam England finished with 14 saves for the Cougars while Jackson Hatfield and Dylan Clyne combined to win 8 of 18 on faceoffs.

Alec Mitchell had four goals and was 10 of 18 on faceoffs to lead the Warriors (1-1) while Brian McCown had a goal and an assist. Spencer Zigler and Hale Dodier had a goal apiece and Beckett Rath recorded an assist.

Joel Williams had eight saves in goal for Winnacunnet.

No. 10 Merrimack 4, Chelmsford (Mass.) 3

Max Giles had a goal and an assist, including what proved to be the game-winner as the Tomahawks knocked off the Lions.

Henry Tobin picked up an assist on the goal while Sean Anderson, Hudson Rousseau and Gabe Gorman had a goal apiece.

Mason Tremblay finished with 16 saves for Merrimack (2-0).

Manchester 8, Keene-Monadnock 4

The Kings picked up a road win over the Blackbirds behind three goals from Declan Wotton.

Cade Tripp added two scores for Manchester (1-1) while Brandon Weaver, Trevor Wong and Matt Koenig had a goal apiece. Brady Harrison and Jackson Ulbin-Morin each added an assist.

Cam Roberge finished 12 saves in the win.

Windham 10, Nashua South 1

The Jaguars picked up their first D1 win by knocking off the Panthers.

Sam Kramer led Windham (1-1) with three goals and four assists and Corey Wickman added three scores. Anthony Shi finished with 13 saves.

No. 5 Portsmouth 11, Souhegan 3

Henry Purcell had four goals and an assist to lead the Clippers to a win in their first game of the season.

Cortland Barr added two goals and Reilly Collins had a goal and two assists for Portsmouth (1-0) while Thijs Breelen and Sawyer Bouvier had a goal and an assist each.

Trevor Sifferlen and Sam Biddle each had a goal while Biddle was also 10 of 12 on faceoffs. Alec Lawton, Miles Parker and Nash Conklin each had an assist.

Kai Paterson finished with five saves while Masi Shone, Andy Brown and Josh Cole played well defensively for the Clippers.

Souhegan (0-2) got a goal apiece from Jared Kershaw, Ayden McGrath and Dylan Foley while Sean Reardon had an assist and made 13 saves in goal.

Coe-Brown 18, Pelham 4

The Bears improved to 2-0 on the season, getting a big win over the Pythons at home.

Gil Bean led the way with seven goals and three assists while Joe Fenton had three goals and two assists for Coe-Brown.

Sam Frye added two goals and two assists while Garrett Ward (one assist) and Tim Kerivan also scored twice in the win.

Hollis Brookline 9, Merrimack Valley 6

Noah Taylor scored four goals and had two assists to help lead the Cavaliers to a win over the Pride in the opener for both teams.

Mike O’Hearn and Bennett Torgersen had two goals and two assists apiece and JP Torgersen had a goal and an assist. Sam Petrella added two assists and Colin Mgnuszewski had one and Levi Mitchell recorded 12 saves.

Hanover 13, Alvirne 1

Ben Parker made his first varsity start in goal, recording nine saves, to lead the Bears to a win over the Broncos.

Sam Bagatell led the offense with four goals and two assists while John Scherer had a goal and three assists and Trevor Sanders had two goals and a helper.

Michael Anderson and JJ Bornstein had two goals apiece for Hanover while Casper Besana and Jake Rotchford each scored a goal. Sid Makofsky chipped in with an assist.

Hopkinton 8, Campbell 5

The Cougars fell behind 7-2 in the first half, bounced back with a solid second half, but it wasn’t enough against the Hawks.

Tyler Breton led Campbell (1-1) with three goals while Nick Hershberger and Logan Barka had a goal apiece. Will O’Brien finished with 13 saves and also had an assist.

Plymouth 14, Milford 1

Braeden Orlen had the lone goal for the Spartans in a loss to the Bobcats. Rocco Bartling finished with seven saves for Milford.

Bow 6, Kearsarge 3

Brad Ekstrom finished nine saves and Niko Mallios recorded four assists as the Falcons knocked off the Cougars.

Boys Tennis

Pinkerton 5, Nashua South 4

The Astros swept the doubles matches to rally for a win over the Panthers.

Mason Treadwell and Michael Saab got wins at Nos. 3 and 5 singles, respectively, and then helped their doubles teams to wins. Treadwell and Arav Mahajan got the win at No. 1 doubles while Saab and Jack Welch won at No. 3. Killian Mahan and Quintin Malony won the No. 2 match.

South got wins from Shrey Shraley (No. 1), Nikhil Shakeen (No. 2), Jerry Primo (No. 4) and Vihaan Shah (No. 6).
