AMHERST – Matt Canavan had 15 of his game-high 19 points in the first half as the Souhegan High School boys basketball team broke open a close game in the second quarter Thursday night and beat Sanborn 65-39.
Canavan hit three 3-pointers and went 4 of 4 at the free throw line as the Sabers (9-1) outscored the Indians 22-4 over the final 10 minutes of the first half to lead 36-16 at the break. It was the second win in a row for Souhegan after suffering its only loss of the year to Pembroke last Saturday.
Carter Hayes and Weston Hickman each added seven points for the Sabers, who went on an 11-0 run starting late in the first quarter to turn a 14-12 lead into a 13-point advantage.
“We know they’re a volume shooting team and they need a lot of shots to beat you,” Souhegan coach Peter Pierce said. “We were determined to drive that number down, and in the first quarter, we didn’t. It was up and down in the first quarter. We got our traction and started to run our stuff and get longer possessions, the tide turned in our favor.”
Sanborn (2-7) got 10 points each from Chase Frizzell and Isaiah Reis while Zach Frizzell added seven points.
