Around the Granite State: Windham boys basketball starts fast to beat Nashua South
Here are results from Friday night’s high school sports action.
NASHUA – The Windham High School boys basketball team jumped out to a big early lead and scored enough down the stretch to hold off Nashua South for a 68-60 win Friday night.
Jack Koutrobis led the Jaguars (4-3 in Division I) with 29 points, including five of the team’s 10 3-pointers, while Tyler Jordan, Sam Roidoulis and Jack Murphy each had 11 points.
Josh Caruso had a game-high 34 points to lead the Panthers (5-3), as the senior had three 3-pointers and was 7 of 7 from the free throw line. Shane Lemire and Ayden Clough each had seven points for South.
Windham came out hot, getting out to a 15-2 lead in the first quarter and forcing South to use two timeouts. The lead grew to as many as 18 points, 24-6, in the second quarter, but the Panthers outscored the Jaguars 14-4 to make it an eight-point game at halftime.
Caruso scored nine-straight points for South in the third to make it one-point game, but Koutrobis answered with a 3 to put Windham back up by four. The Panthers had a few chances to tie or take the lead, but couldn’t, and the Jaguars ended the third on a 9-1 run to take a 44-34 lead into the fourth.
The lead grew to double digits again, but the Panthers got within six points with just over two minutes to play, but couldn’t get any closer.
Campbell 57, Kearsarge 46
For the second time this week, the Cougars handed a undefeated team in Division III its first loss of the year.
Logan Rice had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Campbell (8-1) while Jack Breton added 16 points and 12 bounds and Cayden Deleon had 10 points and nine assists.
Kearsarge fell to 8-1 in the division.
Merrimack Valley 71, ConVal 53
The Pride led by 19 points at halftime and cruised past the Cougars to improve to 7-0 in Division II.
Ethan Dukette led the way with 20 points while Aiden Gray added 17 points. Nic Oglesby scored 15 points and Boston Bradicich grabbed 15 rebounds.
Spaulding 58, Nashua North 36.
The Red Raiders snapped a six-game losing streak with a win at home over the Titans.
Marcel Rose and Kyran Jean-Pierre each had 16 points to lead Spaulding (2-6).
Alvirne 54, Londonderry 43
The Broncos ended a three-game skid with a victory at home against the Lancers.
Andrew Deely led the way for Alvirne (4-4) with 21 points.
Girls Basketball
Pembroke 60, Oyster River 56
The Bobcats saw their six-game win streak come to an end against the Spartans, despite 28 points from Olivia Andersen.
Vivian O’Quinn finished with 13 points for Oyster River (6-2 in D2) while Wren Horne finished eight points.
Pelham 62, Souhegan 29
The Sabers came up short in a road game against the Pythons.
Caroline Drum led Souhegan (3-5) with 10 points and Natalie Bryan finished with seven points.
Pelham got 22 points from Grace Reilly while Sophia Guinazzo added 14 points.
Bedford 75, Exeter 37
The Bulldogs led by seven at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Blue Hawks 53-13 in the middle two frames to run away with the win.
Kate Allard had 25 points to lead Bedford (8-0) while Mel McCarthy added 16 points and Ava Collins finished in double figures with 10. Annie Zink chipped in with eight points.
Exeter (4-4) got 10 points from Emma Gillis while Anna McGuinness added nine points.
Salem 74, Keene 39
Makayla Burns scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Blue Devils to the win over the Blackbirds.
Burns hit four 3-pointers while Lindsay Goetz added 18 points and Lilly George was in double figures with 14 points for Salem (6-2).
McKenna Nelson led Keene with 19 points while Harper Zalaski added nine points.
Pinkerton 57, Manchester Central-West 24
The Astros overcame a slow start to outscored Central-West 22-5 in the third quarter to break the game open.
Sydney Gerossie led the way with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, for Pinkerton (7-1). Mia Marshall and Kaylee Dupuis each added 12 points to help the Astros to get the win.
Timberlane 53, Sanborn 24
The Owls went on the road to grab a win over the Indians from D2.
Sam Wooley had four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to lead Timberlane (5-4) and Rylee Donahue had 10 of her 12 points in the first half.
Swimming
Keene boys take first, girls second
The Blackbirds competed in a meet Friday night, with the boys recording 439 points to finish first while the girls came in second with 268, behind only Windham (448).
Andrew O’Donnell led Keene with a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (59.46) and was second in the 50 freestyle (24.19). Morgan Murray came in first in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.98) while Dominic Smith came in second (1:11.06) andColin Hennigan came in third (1:14.63).
O’Donnell, Hennigan, Murray and Smith teamted with Conrad Smith, Brayden Rodgers and Sullivan Murray to win the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyl relays.
For the girls, Cate Hennigan won the 100 breaststroke (1:18.49) and then Hennigan teamed up with Oliva Cutler, Isabella Mitchell and Julia Grant to take second in the 200 medley relay (2:19.5). Hennigan, Cutler, Grant and Sophie Saari also took second in the 200 freestyle relay.
ConVal’s Bryanna Mattson came in first in the 100 freestyle (1:00.04) and was second in the 50 freestyle (27.41) while Fall Mountain’s Avery Richardson took second in the 200 freestyle (2:20.27).
