Bedford girls soccer upsets Exeter to win D1 championship

MANCHESTER – Asha Steele scored the game’s only goal in the 63rd minute and the No. 3 Bedford High School girls soccer team upset No. 1 Exeter 1-0 to win the Division I championship on Saturday.

Steele scored off an assist from Regan Schiappa, putting a shot high into the net, just over the arm of Exeter goalie Jessica Long, who finished with two saves. Bedford (15-2-2) got eight saves from goalie Brooke Barrett.

The loss snapped a 42-game winning streak for Exeter (18-1), which had won the last four championships in Division I/Class L and five of the previous six. That includes last year’s championship game, in which the Blue Hawks beat the Bulldogs 5-1.
