BEDFORD – The Bedford High School boys tennis team took its first step toward a championship Tuesday, defeating Pelham 6-0 in the Division II quarterfinals in a rain-shortened match.
The match was the first time the teams had played since last year’s Class I championship match, which Bedford won 5-4. The top-seeded Bulldogs (15-0) need two more wins to complete their second straight undefeated season. No. 8 Pelham finishes the season with a record of 9-6.
Bedford won three of the six singles matches by a score of 8-0, including Mark HoSang’s win over Matt Smith at the No. 1 match. Myles Utell took the No. 2 match, beating Pelham’s Jared Taylor 8-2, and James Delahunty knocked off Ethan Ely, 8-0, in the No. 3 match.
McKinley Grimes won the No. 4 match, besting Gabe Ramos 8-0, and Taylor Summerville got a victory at No. 5, defeating Adam Duff Marsh 8-1. Steven Troy took the No. 6 match 8-1 over Ben Harris.
The teams started the doubles matches, but they were called off when rain started to fall.
Bedford will now face No. 4 Portsmouth, which defeated No. 5 Lebanon 5-1 in the quarterfinals, at 4 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.
