EXETER – The second half had just gotten underway when lightning delayed Friday’s game between the Bishop Guertin and Exeter high school football teams.
After a delay of about a half an hour, play was suspended with the Cardinals holding a 15-14 lead while Exeter faced a second-and-6 from its own 44-yard line with 11:33 remaining in the third quarter.
The game was delayed for more than 20 minutes in the first quarter after Bishop Gueritn’s Mitch Lachs suffered what appeared to be an arm injury and was attended to along the Cardinals’ sideline. Rain went from steady to pouring, and players were eventually sent to the locker rooms.
Three plays after the game resumed, Exeter’s Brayden Lowery scored from 5 yards out to give the Blue Hawks a 7-0 with 4:27 left in the first.
Bishop Guertin tied the game midway through the second on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Sam Raitt on fourth-and-goal from the Exeter 1, capping a nine-play drive. Raitt, who had 83 yards rushing in the first half, ran for 15 yards on the drive and threw for another 30.
Exeter answered with a 10-play, 85-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard scoring run by Kyle Ball that gave the Blue Hawks a 14-7 lead with 1:26 left in the half.
The Cardinals only needed a minute to find the end zone, scoring a 22-yard touchdown pass from Raitt to Henry Boyle. Bishop Guertin ran a fake on the extra point and Michael Allanach scored to give the Cardinals a 15-14 lead.
The game is scheduled to resume Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.
