Boys hockey rankings for Jan. 9

The Bedford High School boys hockey team has opened with one of the tougher division schedules this season, and the Bulldogs have handled it well.

Bedford’s four games have been against the other teams in the top five in Division I, and the Bulldogs have put together an unbeaten record (3-0-1), so it’s no surprise they’d be at the top of the season’s first rankings. Coming in behind Bedford is Keene, which has also started the season undefeated in Division II, while Concord is at No. 3 and Goffstown comes in at No. 4. The top Division III team, Kennett, rounds out the top five.

Here are the complete statewide rankings, along with the rankings for each division.

How the rankings are done

We took the NHIAA’s football rating system, and gave it a little tweak. Instead of 10 points for a win, we weighted the wins by division, giving 12 for a win over a D1 team, 10 for a win over D2 and eight for a win over D3. Plus, every team got two points for a win by a beaten opponent. In the case of ties, point totals were cut in half. The two point totals were added together and divided by the number of games played.
