Boys Lacrosse Roundup: Portsmouth scores late to beat Winnacunnet (video)
Here are results from Monday’s high school boys lacrosse action.
PORTSMOUTH – Two players making their first varsity starts Monday night played key roles as the Portsmouth High School boys lacrosse team pulled off a 6-5 win over Winnacunnet.
Freshman Max Deneen scored three goals, including the game-winner with 2:09 remaining and senior AJ Craig made 14 saves to help the Clippers (1-0, No. 5 in the New Hampshire Orthopaedic Center/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) get past the Warriors (0-1, No. 7).
Trevor Sifferlen, Cortland Barr and Gus Baker added a goal apiece for Portsmouth while Sam Biddle and Miles Parker each had an assist.
Winnacunnet got two goals and an assist from Liam McNally while Alec Mitchell and Beckett Rath had a goal and an assist apiece. Mitchell was also 11 of 15 on faceoffs and Spencer Zigler also had a goal while Burke Spaulding had an assist.
Joel Williams finished with 12 saves for the Warriors.

No. 1 Bishop Guertin 18, No. 8 Londonderry 5
Sean McGarry scored five goals to help lead the Cardinals to a win over the Lancers.
Jack Redfern added four goals and an assist for Bishop Guertin while Owen King scored three goals. Tyler McLeod caused 10 turnovers and had two assists and Hugh Roark scored his first varsity goal and won 70 percent of his faceoffs.
No. 2 Pinkerton 22, Salem 1
Levi Weaver and Matt Gormady opened the season with a bang to lead the Astros past the Blue Devils.
Weaver had eight goals and two assists and Gormady recorded seven goals and three assists to lead Pinkerton. Dylan Stingel and Tyler Pinardi combined to win 21 of 25 faceoffs while Owen Perkins and Gavin Burwell played well in goal.
Nate Smith had four groundballs and Brady Blaszka had three caused turnovers for the Astros.
Nashua South 16, Manchester 1
Owen Roy scored six goals to lead the Panthers to a road win over the Kings.
Grant Imbeault added four goals and an assist and Cody Jackson scored three goals and had two assists for South.
Tyler Benzekri also had a goal to go with four assists while Max Signoroni and Brendan Skelley had a goal and two assists apiece. Joe Kudla added two assists in the win.
Laconia 12, Kearsarge 5
The Sachems scored seven goals in the fourth quarter to pull away for a win over the Cougars.
Brady Keegan led Laconia with four goals and an assist while Paul Ganchi and Rock Londer added three goals and an assist each. Kam Theos also scored twice and Chris Amato added an assist.
Brecken O’Reilly scooped up eight groundballs and Will Stafford was strong on faceoffs for the Sachems. Alex Prescott made 12 saves to get his first varsity win in goal.
Kearsarge got a goal apiece from Austin Bryk, Grafton Greico, Blake Greico, Quinn Cusick and Justin St. Onge.
Campbell 6, Souhegan 5
The Cougars scored the winning goal with eight seconds remaining to beat the Sabers.
Tyler Breton led the way with three goals for Campbell and Evan Molino added two scores. Matthew Decarli also had a goal in the win and Will O’Brien finished with 10 saves.
Souhegan got two goals and an assist from Nate Hill and a goal and an assist from Mason Mobley. Jud Harris and Liam Bacon added a goal apiece and Sean Reardon made 11 saves.
Mobley’s goal came with 1:40 left in the fourth quarter to put the Sabers up 5-4, but Campbell scored twice in the final 75 seconds to get the win.
No. 9 Merrimack 15, Nashua North 6
Sean Anderson had four goals and an assist in the Tomahawks’ season-opening win over the Titans.
Shea Scott (two assists) and Austin Kovaliv (one) added three goals apiece and Cayden Dine had a goal and three assists. Josh Kahn and Gabe Borman each scored two goals and had an assist.
Gavin Hickey and Trevor Shorette had an assist apiece and Mason Tremblay made 13 saves for Merrimack.
North got two goals from Nick Wilkinson while Gavin Dugan and Ricky Mckenzie had a goal apiece. Josh Parsons finished with 20 saves.
Dover 10, Ouster River-Newmarket 4
The Green Wave had a 3-2 lead at halftime but pulled away in the third quarter to beat the Bobcats.
Logan Carter led Dover with five goals while Parker Ketcham had three goals and two assists. Cooper Kethcam added a goal and three assists while Sylas Brown had a goal and Porter Gray had an assist.
Owen Wood won 13 of 18 faceoffs while Bryson Glidden, Ethan Morin and Ryan Hebert played well defensively.
John Stark 21, Stevens 1
The Generals got a point from a dozen players in a season-opening win over the Cardinals.
Caden Potter and Charlie Pierce both played well for John Stark, combining to win all but one faceoff. Parker Hamel finished with four saves, including the 200th of his career.
Coe-Brown 14, Milford 1
Robert Lee had four goals and three assists to help the Bears to a road win over the Spartans.
Garrett Ward added two goals and an assist and Joseph Fenton also scored twice for Coe-Brown while Ashton Bethke and Myles Brackett each had a goal and two assists.
John Baer also had a goal and an assist while Tim Kerivan, Jack Therrien and Charles Frye added a goal apiece. Abel Szatko, Glenn Papineau, Landon Midwood and Brody Rickwall each had an assist and Jackson Alie had five saves.
Freshman Josh Clark scored his first varsity goal in the final minute for Milford as the Spartans battled to the end.
No. 4 Exeter 18, Windham 4
Sam Kramer scored two goals for the Jaguars in a road loss to the Blue Hawks.
Josh Trudel and Cameron Terry added a goal apiece for Windham.
Plymouth 8, Gilford 4
Jack Fountain had two goals but the Golden Eagles came up short against the Bobcats.
Christen Nunez added a goal and two assists for Gilford while Emmett Hughes also scored. Brady Shepard and Kael Weber played well defensively in the loss.
