Chick-Fil-A Holiday Tournament Roundup: Day 2 (video)
Here’s a look at results from the second day of the Chick-Fil-A Holiday Tournament.
The Nashua High School South girls basketball team had three players score in double figures Thursday to knock off Campbell 63-42 and advance to the championship game of the Chick-Fil-A Holiday Tournament.
Jasmine Sylvester scored a game-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Panthers while Aryanna Murray added 16 points and Amber Hedquist had 11 to send South to the final, where it will face Merrimack at 5:30 p.m. Friday at South.
The Panthers led most of the way, going up by double digits in the third before Campbell was able to cut the lead to nine going into the fourth. But South went on a 16-1 run to open the quarter to take a 59-35 lead.
Kendall Bush chipped in with nine points for the Panthers, as nine players scored for South.
Emma Rousseau led the Cougars with 16 points while Tori Allen and Gabrielle Sott had six points apiece. Campbell shot just 10 of 24 from the free throw line.
Merrimack 48, Goffstown 29
The Tomahawks ended the third quarter with an 8-0 run to take control of the game and advance to the final with a win over the Grizzlies. Merrimack will face South in the championship game on Friday.
Theresa Twardosky led Merrimack with 12 points, on four 3-pointers, and Sam Page was also in double figures with 10 points. Sabrina Johnson added seven points and Sara Wozniak chipped in with six.
Merrimack led 21-15 at halftime, but the Grizzlies were able to make it a three-point game, 26-23, on a 3 by Kelly Walsh with 3:50 left in the third. The Tomahawks answered with an 8-0 run to take a 34-23 lead into the fourth and stretched it into a 20-2 run to go up 46-25 with 3:34 to play.
Walsh led all scorers with 15 points and Jessica Edmonds added four points for the Grizzlies, who will take on Campbell in the third-place game Friday at 3:30 p.m.
In the consolation girls games, Nashua North beat Alvirne, 44-33, and Keene knocked off Milford 49-28. North and Keene will play in the fifth-place game at 11 a.m., while Alvirne and Milford will play for seventh place at 8 a.m.
Boys
Alvirne 55, Nashua North 39
The Broncos scored 42 points in the first half and cruised through the second to knock off the Titans and move on to the boys championship game. Alvirne will face Merrimack at 6:30 p.m. on Friday for the tournament title.
Max Bonney-Liles had 14 points for the Broncos and Meshak Mugariri added 10 points, while Cam Jones, Joe Canelas and Paul Manzi had four points apiece.
Alvirne led by 22 points at halftime, but North outscored the Broncos 19-13 in the second half. Curtis Harris led the Titans with 13 points while Casey Lane added eight and Brenden Choate had six.
Merrimack 47, Souhegan 26
The Tomahawks held the Sabers to just 10 points in the first half, as they reached the final for the third year in a row. Merrimack, which has never lost a game in the tournament, will try to win its third straight title against Alvirne on Friday.
Owen Ploss had 15 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Merrimack while J.J. Martinez came off the bench to score nine points and Adam Ellis recorded seven. The Tomahawks led 43-19 with a little more than three minutes to play when Souhegan was able to close the game on a 7-4 spurt.
Jeffrey Boehm led the Sabers with seven points and Anderson Geffrard added six points. Souhegan will play in the third-place game Friday against Nashua North at 3:30 p.m.
In boys consolation games, Goffstown beat Milford, 56-48, and Thortnon Academy knocked off Nashua South, 52-44. Goffstown and Thornton will play for fifth place at 12:30 p.m. while Milford and South will play at 9:30 a.m. for seventh place.
