Exeter, Bishop Guertin girls soccer battle to scoreless draw (video)
NASHUA – Both sides had opportunities and both sides couldn’t capitalize, as the Exeter and Bishop Guertin high school girls soccer teams played to a scoreless tie Tuesday night at Stellos Stadium.

The Cardinals (1-0-1) had their best chances during regulation, including in the final 10 minutes, when Kiley Deignan put a direct kick from just outside the box over the goal and off the football goal post.
Bishop Guertin also had back-to-back corner kicks in the final four minutes, but the first was punched away by Exeter goalie Julia Wilson (15 saves) and the second hit the side of the net.
The Blue Hawks (0-1-1) also thwarted two Cardinals’ corners in the first overtime, and the second turned into a breakaway opportunity for Exeter’s Lydia Peucker. Bishop Guertin goalie Brooke Barrett (12 saves) came out to try to get to the ball before Peucker could shoot, but the Exeter forward sent the ball toward the goal from 30 yards out and missed wide by a foot.
“I could see the goalkeeper coming out and I wasn’t even sure if Lydia was going to take a touch around her or shooting it right from there,” Exeter coach Megan Young said. “It was hard to tell from my angle. It felt like slow motion watching where it was going to end up.”
It looked the same to Bishop Guertin assistant coach Michael Balous, who was filling in for head coach Pat Mulcahy, who was suspended by the NHIAA for the Cardinals’ first two games of the season after getting two yellow cards in last year’s semifinal loss.
“I didn’t have a great angle on it, but it seemed like it took a minute and a half for the ball to go the final 30 yards,” Balous said. “Fortunately, we got a little bit of a break. It did something, had a little bit of a curve on it.”
Peucker had another breakaway chance in the second overtime, but again, her shot went wide, this time to the far side of the goal.
Both teams have a quick turnaround, as Exeter heads to Concord on Wednesday and Bishop Guertin hosts Londonderry.
