Five to follow: High school vacation week

April vacation is here and that means some time off for some high school sports teams. For others, like the Souhegan baseball team, its a full slate of games this week. The Sabers (1-2 in Division II) have played just three games this season and things aren’t going to get easier this week.

April vacation is here and that means some time off for some high school sports teams.

For others, like the Souhegan baseball team, its a full slate of games this week. The Sabers (1-2 in Division II) have played just three games this season and things aren’t going to get easier this week.

Souhegan starts the week by hosting Goffstown (2-2) on Monday at 4 p.m. The Grizzlies, who won Class L in 2008, dropped down to Division II this season and are considered among the favorites this season.

But that’s just one of the challenges for Souhegan this week. The Sabers head to John Stark on Wednesday before returning to Amherst to host Portsmouth (4-0), which hasn’t lost a game since 2007. The Clippers have won 67 straight games going into this week, which ranks fourth all-time in the nation, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, eight games off the record of 75.

Friday’s game is also scheduled for 4 p.m.

2. Nashua North at Dover baseball, Thursday, 4 p.m.

The Titans (5-0) enter this week as the only undefeated team left in Division I. Dover (4-1) dropped its first game of the season last Friday, falling to Concord 15-6. The Green Wave enter this week’s games averaging 10.2 runs per game, while North has allowed more than three runs just one this season. But, aside from a 14-9 win over Timberlane, the Titans  have scored five or fewer runs in the rest of their games.

3. Londonderry at Nashua South softball, Wednesday, 4 p.m.

After scoring a combined eight runs in its first two games, Londonderry has outscored its opponents 33-1 in its last two. The Lancers (4-0) will face a South team that’s coming off its first loss of the year, a 7-5 setback to Manchester Central. The Panthers (4-1) opened the year with back-to-back shutouts, but have given up five and seven runs, respectively, in their last two games.

4. Bishop Guertin at Exeter boys tennis; Exeter at Bishop Guertin girls tennis, Monday, 4 p.m.

Both boys and girls teams are at the top of the Division I standings, as the Cardinals and Blue Hawks boys teams enter undefeated at 4-0. The Exeter boys played in the Class L final the last two years, winning in 2009 and losing 2010. Both teams have won three of their four matches by a count of 9-0. The Bishop Guertin girls (5-0) are one of two teams left unbeaten, while Exeter’s only loss this year came against Derryfield.

5. Pinkerton at Souhegan girls lacrosse, Tuesday, 4 p.m.

Souhegan (4-0) is off to a strong start, averaging over 14 goals in its first four games. The Sabers take on Concord (3-0) on Monday and the host Pinkerton (3-0), one of the favorites in Division I this season.
