Football Roundup: Campbell gets past Somersworth for playoff win
Here’s a look at the weekend’s playoff football results.
Scott Hershberger took one step closer to the history books and the Campbell High School football team took one step closer to its ultimate goal.
The senior running back rushed for 331 yards and four touchdowns to help lead the top-seeded Cougars to a 46-27 win over No. 8 Somersworth in Saturday’s Division III quarterfinals in Litchfield.
That total means Hershberger needs just 34 rushing yards this season to break the career state record of 5,890 yards, set by Souhegan’s Sean Jellison.
Seth Worrell, Max Ridings, Jackson Dumont and Nate Gray each had a touchdown for Somersworth (3-6).
Campbell (9-0) will host No. 4 Gilford in the D3 semifinals next Saturday. Gilford defeated No. 5 Newport 40-20 in the quarterfinals.
No. 2 Monadnock 28, No. 7 Laconia 27
Kaden Smith found Tucker Johns for a 5-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left and Koby Kindey ran in the two-point conversion to give the Huskies a comeback win over the Sachems in the D3 quarterfinals.
The touchdown capped an 80-yard drive and gave Monadnock its only lead of the game. The Sachems had gone in front on a 6-yard run by Carter Jones with 4:09 left.
Ryan Walsh had two touchdowns for Laconia (4-5) while Jacob Tryon also scored to help give the Sachems a 20-6 lead in the second quarter. A 38-yard touchdown run by Nick Ball pulled Monadnock (8-1) within 20-14 at the half.
Kidney scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to tie the game at 20.
The Huskies move on to the D3 semifinals, where they will host No. 3 Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough next Saturday. ILM came back to beat No. 6 Stevens 18-13.
Division I
No. 12 Windham 8, No. 5 Salem 7
The Jaguars pulled off the upset of the Blue Devils, getting a 1-yard touchdown run Mike Brearly and then a successful two-point conversion for the program’s first D1 playoff win on Friday.
Brearly scored with 9:52 left in the third quarter, a score that came off a lost fumble by Salem. Windham (4-5) survived a late field goal attempt by Salem (6-3) to hang on for the win.
Kevin Todisco scored on a 20-yard run with 1:56 left in the first quarter to give the Blue Devils the lead.
The Jaguars advance to the D1 quarterfinals, where they will play at No. 4 Pinkerton next weekend.
No. 7 Manchester Memorial 22, No. 10 Winnacunnet 13
The Crusaders picked up their second win of the season over the Warriors in the program’s first playoff appearance in 21 years on Friday.
Collin Beaulieu accounted for two touchdowns, one rushing and one passing, to help lead Memorial (8-2), while Mo Olanweraju gave the Crusaders the lead with a 6-yard run. Beaulieu then connected with Joel Gomez for a 21-yard touchdown and then the two-point conversion to make it 16-0.
Winnacunnet (5-4) answered in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run by Mason McDonald and a 21-yard scoring toss from Riley McDaniel to Jaxon McDonald to make it 16-13.
That’s where the score stood until early in the fourth, when Beaulieu scored on a 15-yard run to put the game away for Memorial.
The Crusaders move on to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 2 Exeter on the road next weekend.
