Merrimack upsets Salem to advance to D1 field hockey semifinals

Katie Correia scored a goal with 2:32 left in the game to lift the Merrimack High School field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Salem in the Division I quarterfinals Friday.

The win, No. 6 Merrimack’s second of the season over No. 3 Salem, sends the Tomahawks to the semifinals for the first time in program history. There, Merrimack will face No. 2 Manchester Memorial at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.

Kelley Keenan put Salem on the board first, scoring with 15:12 left in the first half, but Merrimack tied the game less than two minutes later on a goal by Jess Lorento. Emily Devaney made 19 saves for the Tomahawks.

Memorial advanced to the final four by beating No. 7 Bishop Guertin 2-0 Friday. The Crusaders defeated Merrimack 1-0 during the regular season.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Pinkerton defeated No. 8 Dover 5-0, while No. 4 Winnacunnet knocked off No. 5 Exeter 1-0. Pinkerton and Winnacunnet will meet in the other semifinal Tuesday at 7 p.m.
