NASHUA – Kirk Palladino scored 16 points and the Milford High School boys basketball team was able to hold off a late charge by Thornton Academy to get a 54-51 on the final day of the Chick-Fil-A Holiday Tournament.
Palladino had four of the Spartans’ six 3-pointers and Jack Briggs added nine points as Milford finished 2-1 at the tournament to take fifth place. The Spartans trailed early in the first quarter, but used a 12-2 run to take a 21-14 lead early in the second quarter.
Milford was able to maintain a lead throughout the game, but the Trojans were able to cut the lead to one, 50-49, with a chance to tie to after Corey Hart was fouled on a made layup. But Hart missed the free throw, and after a Thornton foul, Briggs slipped behind the defense and scored to get the lead to three.
The Spartans fouled with 12.4 seconds left and Hart made both free throws to again make it a one-point game, but Milford’s Dan Murray scored to make it 54-51 and Hart’s halfcourt attempt at the buzzer hit off the rim.
Kevin Barrett had 25 points to lead Thornton and finished with a three-game average of 22.0, while Hart had 11 points in the loss.
Milford returns to its regular-season schedule on Jan. 6 at Souhegan.
