AMHERST – Chuck Roberson was impressed with the way his Milford High School volleyball team played Monday night against Souhegan.

What exactly that means for this season remains to be seen.

For one night the Spartans, were on, beating the Sabers 25-14, 25-13, 25-13, to improve to 5-1 in Division II this season. The loss drops Souhegan to 1-3.

Brooke Olsen led Milford with 12 kills and two blocks, and Abby Blanchet had 24 assists, two aces and two kills, as the Spartans put together a run to finish off each game.

“I’m impressed with their focus,” Roberson said. “What happens is you tend to relax (when you’re ahead) and I thought we played well the entire night. That’s the focus. We haven’t relaxed. We’ve stayed reasonably focused the whole time and picked it up at the end. I’m impressed with us, but I don’t know how impressed.”

Milford closed out the first game on a 9-5 run, then finished out the second game, 7-2, and the third game, 8-2. Souhegan led early in Game 3, 7-6, but was outscored 18-6 the rest of the way.

“We passed amazingly, we just couldn’t put the ball down, couldn’t find a hole in the floor,” Souhegan coach Kim Baron said. “That comes with more experience. The team that I have is very young and not experienced. I have a lot of young kids.”

Ella Garvey led Souhegan with four kills while Jess Roberge had five assists and Oksana Clay had two aces.

The Sabers were hosting “A Night for Building Bridges,” a team fundraiser to benefit Bridges, an area non-profit organization that supports victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“It’s something that’s in our community,” Baron said of Bridges. “I thought for a local charity, it would be good to bring awareness to (the players). They really embraced it and worked really hard together and did a great job to support it. Hopefully, we can do it a yearly thing.”
