Sweeney Post 2 ended up as the top seed out of District A for the American Legion state tournament.

The tournament field is set for the American Legion senior league, with the first two games scheduled for Friday at Holman Stadium.

Here’s a look at the final standings and the tournament field.

District A

  1. Sweeney (13-5)*
  2. Bedford (13-5)*
  3. Lebanon (13-5)*
  4. Milford (12-6)*

The rest: Goffstown (11-7), Plymouth (10-8), Concord (9-9), Laconia (5-13), Keene (3-15), Jutras (1-17).

A three-way tie for first place seems like it would be a complicated thing, but this tiebreaker is pretty easy to figure out. Sweeney had a 3-1 head-to-head record against Bedford and Lebanon, which means Post 2 is the top seed in the district. Bedford was 2-0 against Lebanon, so it gets the second seed and Lebanon is the third seed. Even though Milford won both of its final two games, it didn’t hold the tiebreaker over Goffstown and needed help from Jutras, Concord or Laconia over the weekend. It got it from Laconia, which rebounded from 9-3 loss to Goffstown in the first game of a doubleheader to win 4-3 in the final game of the regular season. That loss knocked Goffstown out and gave Milford its first berth in the state tournament.

District B

  1. Rochester (16-2)*
  2. Exeter (14-4)*
  3. Londonderry (12-6)*
  4. Dover (11-7)*

The rest: Nashua (10-8), Merrimack (8-10), Portsmouth (7-11), Hudson (6-12), Derry (5-13), Salem (1-17).

No real surprises here, as the top three teams had already clinched spots going into the weekend. Despite a head-to-head meeting between Dover and Nashua on Saturday, Nashua seemed to have the easier road to a playoff spot with two other games against Merrimack and Derry, while Dover had two games against Rochester. But Nashua lost to Merrimack on Friday and Dover beat Rochester on Sunday to give Post 8 a shot at defending its title, something no team has done since Jutras in 1996-97.
