Preview capsules for Week 3 of the Division I football season
Here’s a quick look at each Week 3 game in Division I football action.
Bedford (2-0) at Winnacunnet (2-0)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m. at Alumni Field, Hampton.
- Last Game: Bedford beat Portsmouth 64-20; Winnacunnet beat Concord 28-14.
- Last Meeting: Bedford won 21-0 on Sept. 19, 2014.
- FYI: Connor Robert has led the way for the Bulldogs, throwing for six touchdowns and rushing for four more in the team’s first two games … Winnacunnet’s offense had four turnovers in last week’s win over Concord and the defense allowed 422 yards … this is a rematch of the 2012 Division II championship game, won by Winnacunnet.
Nashua South (0-2) at Merrimack (2-0)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m. at Merrimack.
- Last Game: South lost to Pinkerton 28-6; Merrimack beat Bishop Guertin 42-19.
- Last Meeting: Nashua South won 43-14 on Sept. 20, 2014.
- FYI: For the second week in a row, the Panthers allowed over three hundred yards rushing, and South has been outscored 68-20 this season … Merrimack’s Joe Eichman has 379 yards of total offense and five touchdowns this season … the teams had identical records when they met in 2014, in game where Merrimack turned the ball over six times. Goffstown (2-0) at Exeter (2-0)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m. at Bill Ball Stadium, Exeter.
- Last Game: Goffstown beat Dover 27-20; Exeter beat Spaulding 42-0.
- Last Regular Season Meeting: Goffstown won 28-14 on Sept. 20, 2014.
- FYI: The Grizzlies, who got out to a 27-0 lead after three quarters against Dover, got 127 yards rushing from quarterback Charlie Keith … the Blue Hawks have outscored their first two opponents 90-20 this season … under coach Justin Hufft, Goffstown is 2-0 against against, including a win in the 2015 championship game.
Manchester Memorial (0-2) at Portsmouth (1-1)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m. at Portsmouth.
- Last Game: Memorial lost to Manchester Central 47-40; Porstmouth lost to Bedford 64-20.
- Last Meeting: Portsmouth won 28-21 on Sept. 19, 2014.
- FYI: Memorial quarterback Chris Coburn had a hand in all six of the Crusaders’ touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) against Central last week … dating back to last season, in Portsmouth’s last two games against teams other than Spaulding, the Clippers have allowed over 60 points.
Nashua North (2-0) at Londonderry (2-0)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m., at Londonderry.
- Last Game: North beat Alvirne 38-6; Londonderry beat Timberlane 27-7.
- Last Meeting: Londonderry won 49-13 on Sept. 19, 2014.
- FYI: For the second week in a row, the Titans had over four hundred yards of offense in the win over Alvirne … the Lancers used a ball-control offense again, scoring on four drives of 12 plays or more … North hasn’t beaten Londonderry since 2011. Spaulding (0-2) at Manchester Central (1-1)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m. at Gill Stadium, Manchester.
- Last Game: Spaulding lost to Exeter 42-0; Central beat Manchester Memorial 47-40.
- Last Meeting: Spaulding won 14-10 on Sept. 19, 2014.
- FYI: Spaulding quarterback Noah Lapointe threw was 13 of 25 for 115 yards in last week’s loss to Exeter … Central quarterback Alex Hawkom was 16 of 26 for 244 yards and also had a 128 yards rushing against Memorial … this is only the second meeting between the two programs.
Dover (0-2) at Concord (0-2)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m. at Memorial Field, Concord.
- Last Game: Dover lost to Goffstown 27-20; Concord lost to Winnacunnet 28-14.
- Last Meeting: Concord won 48-15 on Sept. 20, 2014.
- FYI: Dover’s John Cantwell came off the bench at quarterback to lead the Green Wave to three fourth-quarter touchdowns and a near comeback against the Grizzlies … Concord had over four hundred yards of offense, but had four drives stall inside the Winnacunnet 30.
Alvirne (0-2) at Keene (0-2)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m. at Keene.
- Last Game: Alvirne lost to Nashua North 38-6; Keene lost to Salem 57-14.
- Last Meeting: Keene won 18-6 on Oct. 24, 2016.
- FYI: These two teams have combined for just 13 wins over the last three seasons.
Timberlane (0-2) at Bishop Guertin (0-2)
- When: Friday, 7 p.m. at Stellos Stadium, Nashua
- Last Game: Timberlane lost to Londonderry 27-7; Bishop Guertin lost to Merrimack 42-19.
- Last Meeting: Timberlane won 27-22 on Sept. 19, 2014.
- FYI: The Owls got a good game out of running back Farai Zhou, who had 94 yards on the ground, but didn’t get much else … quarterback Sam Raitt had to do it all last week, carrying the ball 31 times and passing it 31 times.
Pinkerton (2-0) at Salem (2-0)
- When: Saturday, 2 p.m. at Salem.
- Last Game: Pinkerton beat Nashua South 28-6; Salem beat Keene 57-14.
- Last Meeting: Salem won 41-28 on Sept. 16, 2016.
- FYI: While the Pinkerton offense has been impressive, the defense has allowed just six points through two games … Salem’s Josh Sibanda is averaging 14.9 yards per carry this season … the Blue Devils’ win over the Astros last year was their first since 2009, and first in Derry since 2002.
