AMHERST – The Souhegan High School girls soccer team is still trying to figure some things out.

When the Sabers finally do, look out Division II.

Souhegan scored three goals in each half and found a way to limit Milford’s Morgan Andrews in a 6-2 win over the Spartans on Friday that improved the Sabers’ record to 4-0 in the division. The loss drops Milford to 2-2.

Caroline Schagrin scored two goals for Souhegan while Agnes Chretien had a goal and three assists and Peyton Kent scored a goal and added an assist. Mikaela Sullivan made 14 saves in goal.

“We’ve got lots of young kids and we’ve been trying to figure out where those kids go,” Souhegan coach Dwayne Andreasen said. “While trying to figure out where they’re at their best, we’ve stressed energy. You’ve got to play hard for 80 minutes.

“I think we’re trying to figure out who is the perfect striker and who is the perfect midfielder, but I think we found that we’ve got a lot of kids who can play well in a lot of different places. They have the energy level and they know what we want out of them.”

Andrews managed a goal and an assist despite being marked the entire game by Souhegan’s Taylor Behn. But by the time Milford finally got on the board, it was already too far behind.

The Sabers led 3-0 at halftime on goals by Sarah Lafleur, Kent and Schagrin. Milford had a couple of chances in the first half, but Sullivan came up big when needed.

Schagrin made it a four-goal game under a minute into the second half, tucking a shot under Milford goalie Casey Phelps and under the cross bar.

The Spartans came right back with a goal of their own, as Kendra Bonczar converted a long pass from Andrews, but with Souhegan up 4-1, it was a different game.

“What killed us was that fourth goal about (a minute) into the second,” Milford coach John Vlachos said. “Now it’s 4-0. We don’t let that goal in and all of a sudden it’s 3-1 and now you’re in the game. A shot puts you right back in the game.

“At 4-0, I was glad to see our team come back. I thought we played better in the second half. I thought we passed better in the second half. We’re still learning and trying to catch up.”

Milford cut the lead to two goals in the 54th minute off an indirect kick. Dina Pitsas rolled the ball to Andrews, who circled around two charging defenders, beat two more to the goal and sent a shot to the far corner to make it 4-2.

But four minutes later, Sullivan stopped a direct kick from Andrews and started a breakaway that ended in goal by Rachel Facey to make it 5-2. Chretien added a goal in the 74th minute to finish out the scoring.

“This is a huge win for us,” Andreasen said. “We always expect that we’re going to win, but I don’t think anything would have told us we’d have it 6-2 (against Milford). We’ve struggled to put the ball in the net. I’m really proud of my girls. They did a great job.”
