Souhegan holds off Milford in opening game of Chick-fil-A Holiday Basketball Tournament

NASHUA – The Souhegan High School boys basketball team led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter and held on for a 62-58 win over Milford in the first game Thursday of the Chick-fil-A Holiday Basketball Tournament at Nashua South.

NASHUA – The Souhegan High School boys basketball team led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter and held on for a 62-58 win over Milford in the first game Thursday of the Chick-fil-A Holiday Basketball Tournament at Nashua South.

Brian Dworkin had 18 points to lead the Sabers and A.J. Hayes scored seven of his 16 points in the fourth quarter as Souhegan was trying to close out the win. The Sabers led 56-41 with 4:26 to go, but the Spartans got the lead down to seven points with 1:41 to play.

Seth Hopkins led Milford with 16 points and Ross Briggs added 15 points, including 11 0f 14 from the free throw line. Milford led early in the game, but Souhegan went on a 12-0 run in the first half to lead 20-8 early in the second quarter.

The Spartans got the lead down to seven at halftime, 29-22, and Souhegan led 31-26 early in the third before going on an 11-3 run to get the lead back to double digits.

Souhegan will now play in the semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. against Alvirne, while Milford plays in a consolation game against Nashua North at 3 p.m. The Spartans, who joined the field in 2011, will be looking for their first win in the tournament.
