MANCHESTER – Troy Fowler wanted to finish his high school baseball career with a win and he did everything he could Saturday to make that happen.
Fowler drove in four runs and pitched a complete game to lead the Sunapee High School baseball team to its second-straight Division IV championship, as the No. 3 Lakers beat No. 5 Newmarket 13-1 at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester.
Sunapee scored three runs in the third inning and broke the game open in the sixth, scoring eight runs on five singles, four walks, a hit batter and a suicide squeeze.
“I was a little nervous in the beginning, but after I saw Troy (Fowler) pitch, I settled,” Sunapee coach Thomas Frederick said. “That sixth inning, we wanted to get that one run across and everything went from there.”
Fowler allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 10 for the Lakers (17-3). The senior, who didn’t give up a hit after the third, was also 2 for 2 at the plate with two walks, two runs scored and four RBIs.
“Everything was working really well,” Fowler said. “That was one thing we really wanted to do, end senior year with a win.”
Brett Simpson was 2 for 4 with three RBIs for Sunapee and Nick Skarin had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two out of the No. 9 spot in the order.
Andrew Oliver suffered the loss for Newmarket (15-5), going 4 1/3 and allowing five runs on six hits, four walks and two hit batters with four strikeouts. Sean Fleming, who doubled in the first inning, went a 1 1/3 in relief, giving up six runs on two hits, three walks and a hit batter.
