While there were plenty of great games this season, this list is the five best games that I saw in person this year. Certainly, there were many more, and if you’ve got ones you feel could also be on the list, feel free to leave them in the comments.
No. 5: Bishop Guertin 3, Concord 2 (OT) (Sept. 9)
This was a back-and-forth battle between two teams that would eventually finish in the top eight of the Division I standings. Bishop Guertin took the lead early, but Concord scored twice in the second quarter – including just before halftime – to go in front. The Cardinals came back in the second half to force overtime before getting the win.
No. 4: Souhegan 1, Plymouth 0 (OT) (Sept. 30)
Plymouth was looking for a marquee win, while Souhegan needed a win period. The teams battled through a scoreless regulation and a stellar individual effort for the Sabers got them the win in overtime.
No. 3: Exeter 1, Bedford 0 (Oct. 26)
Very little separated these two teams when they met in the Division I quarterfinals, as they went back and forth through a scoreless game. Exeter scored the game’s only goal in the fourth quarter, after a Bedford player left early on a penalty corner, leaving the Bulldogs down a defender to start the play.
No. 2: Gilford 2, Berlin 1 (OT) (Oct. 31)
Is there anything scarier than overtime in the playoffs? And on Halloween, too. Gilford was dominant for the first 40 minutes of the Division III semifianl, but had just one goal on the board to show for it. Berlin kept battling, tying the game and taking all the momentum in the fourth quarter. Each team had chances to win in overtime, but it was the Golden Eagles who moved on and went on to win their third D3 title in a row.
No. 1: Hollis Brookline 2, Oyster River 1 (OT) (Sept. 30)
These were the top two teams in Division II standings going into the game, with Oyster River undefeated and Hollis Brookline having one loss, and the game lived up to the hype. The Cavaliers scored on a penalty corner with no time left at the end of the first quarter to take the lead, but the Bobcats stormed back in the third quarter to tie the game. A scoreless fourth sent the game to overtime, and after Oyster River had a string of corners, HB was able to get a breakout opportunity and win the game.
