Top Five Field Hockey Games in 2025

The 2025 field hockey season was an exciting one and there were plenty of games that could qualify as the best of the best.

While there were plenty of great games this season, this list is the five best games that I saw in person this year. Certainly, there were many more, and if you’ve got ones you feel could also be on the list, feel free to leave them in the comments.

No. 5: St. Thomas 3, Mascoma Valley 2 (OT) (Oct. 25)

It’s hard to top overtime playoff games (as you’ll see below), especially in a game that’s back and forth. St. Thomas took the early lead in the Division III quarterfinal before Mascoma came back to tie it before halftime. The Royals then went up in the third quarter, and this time, the Saints came back before the fourth to knot the game again. Mascoma had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but instead, St. Thomas got the win in overtime on the way to its first championships since 2003.

No. 4: Mascenic 3, Hopkinton 2 (OT) (Oct. 29)

Another overtime playoff game that had a lot of twists and turns. Hopkinton controlled play for the entire first half, but led just 1-0. The score was the same going into the fourth when Mascenic turned the tables, scoring twice to take the lead. The Hawks answered late to force overtime, and after a scoreless first OT, the Vikings scored in the second to advance to the D3 championship game for the first time since 2001.

No. 3: Bedford 2, Londonderry 1 (Oct. 3)

The first of two meetings between the teams, Bedford and Londonderry were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the New Hampshire Orthopaedic Center/NHHSSports Coaches Poll at the time of their regular-season game. After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs got on the board first and held off the Lancers until midway through the fourth quarter. Bedford scored the game-winner late to hang on for the win.

No. 2: Souhegan 2, Bow 1 (Nov. 1)

Bow stormed out of the gate in the D2 championship game, throwing everything at Souhegan, but led just 1-0. The Sabers tied the game on a penalty stroke in the second quarter, and it stayed tied through the rest of the first half and most of the second. Souhegan broke the tie midway through the fourth quarter and held on to win its first title since 2007.

No. 1: Derryfield 2, Plymouth 1 (Oct. 23)

How do you top a championship game that goes down to the wire? With a playoff game that goes to the fifth round of a shootout. In the D2 preliminary round, Plymouth took a 1-0 lead in the first half and held it until the final five minutes of regulation, when Derryfield tied the game on a penalty stroke. After two scoreless overtimes, the teams went to a shootout, with the Cougars clinching the win on another penalty stroke in the fifth round.
