Milford Post 23 tops Bedford Post 54 in 13 innings
NASHUA – Ben Osterholtz scored the game-winning run on an error in the bottom of the 13th Sunday to give Milford Post 23 a 5-4 win over Bedford Post 54 in the American Legion state baseball tournament at Holman Stadium.
The win keeps Milford alive in the tournament, setting up a game against Sweeney Post 2 at 1 p.m. Monday, while Bedford was eliminated.
Post 54 had rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning, and went ahead 4-3 in the top of the 12th, but Milford came back, getting an RBI single from Alec Burns that scored CJ Bilodeau from second base to tie the game.
Milford had a chance to win in the 11th, putting runners on first and third, but Bedford’s Kyle Andersson got Ryan Britton pop up on the first pitch to end the threat.
Bedford (13-7) scored the game’s first run in the top of the fourth, as Grayson Jennings walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball.
The lead didn’t last long, as Milford (13-7) went ahead with a three-run fifth inning, getting RBIs from Bilodeau, Joe Grassett and Burns. Bedford tied it with two runs in the eighth off Grassett, who ended up getting the win after pitching seven innings of relief.
The loss ended a promising season for Bedford, which started the year by winning 11 of its first 12 games. Post 54 was just 2-6 in its final eight games, and hasn’t won a game at the state tournament (0-6) since winning it all in 2011.
Dover 8, Lebanon 2
Michael Wasserman pitched a complete game and Dover Post 8 broke open a close game with a four-run seventh inning to stay alive in the tournament, while eliminating Lebanon Post 22 with an 8-2 win.
Wasserman allowed six hits and walked three for Dover (13-7), as both Lebanon (13-7) runs were unearned. Jordan Goss was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored while JT Bishop (run, RBI), Christopher Clement (two runs) and Casey Aubin were each 2 for 5.
Chase Hussey suffered the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits and four walks in six-plus innings. Caleb Broughton and Andrew Houde each scored a run for Post 22.
Rochester 11, Londonderry 10
Rochester Post 7 scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and walked off with the win in extra innings to advance in the winners’ bracket.
Anthony DiPrizio drove home Ben Gravel in the bottom of the 10th to give Rochester (18-2) the come-from-behind win over Londonderry Post 27.
DiPrizio finished the day with two RBIs while Josh Gagne was 2 for 4 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs. Mac Struthers (2 for 5) and Christopher States (2 for 4) also drove in two runs each.
States also picked up the win by pitching three shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit and walking one. Nicholas Salcito suffered the loss after pitching 2 1/3 innings, including getting Londonderry (13-7) out of the eighth inning.
Geoffrey Kayo had a big day for Post 27, going 4 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs, while James Zimolka was 2 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs.
Exeter 4, Sweeney 1
Christian Devine pitched eight solid innings for Exeter and Post 32 scored twice in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie to advance in the winners’ bracket.
Devin allowed one run on five hits and six walks to get the win for Exeter (16-4) and Kyle Ball, Mitchell Sytulek and John Arend each drove in a run. Cody Morrisette and Michael Sterritt each went 3 for 4 in the game.
Aaron Mesereau drove in Brendan Sullivan in the third inning for the lone Sweeney (14-6) run. Grant Corbett took the loss, allowing three runs on 13 hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings.
Exeter (14) and Sweeney (10) combined to leave 24 runners on base.
