Monday’s American Legion roundup
Offensive explosion by Sweeney Post 2 eliminates Milford Post 23
NASHUA – One day after beating a team it had lost to twice during the regular season, Milford Post 23 had the same done to it, falling to Sweeney Post 2 in Monday’s first game at the American Legion senior baseball state tournament.
Sweeney scored five runs in the first, three in the third and two each in the fourth, fifth and sixth to clobber Milford 14-1 in seven innings at Holman Stadium. The game was shortened due to the mercy rule.
Post 2, which lost to Milford twice during the regular season, got three RBIs from Connor Walsh, including a two-run double in the first inning. The first seven batters of the game reached safely for Sweeney (15-6) and it sent 10 to the plate in the first.
Brendan Sullivan was 5 for 5 with two RBIs, Dan O’Connor scored three runs and Brian Shea also drove in a pair. Drew Merrick picked up the win by pitching seven innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out three.
