10 For 10: The top girls basketball players and teams

The last decade has seen a lot of talented girls basketball players come up in the Granite State.

The last decade has seen a lot of talented girls basketball players come up in the Granite State.

This week’s list includes a lot of players who dominated the sport, helping their teams win multiple championships, or make a few title-game appearances. And then they’ve gone on to compete at a high level in college.

The following are the top girls basketball players and teams I’ve covered for this website over the last 10 years, with players listed in alphabetical order and the teams listed chronologically.

Top Players

Erin Carney, Bishop Guertin (2017-20): The state’s 2020 Gatorade Player of the Year, Carney helped the Cardinals win D1 titles in her first three years and Bishop Guertin was the top seed in this year’s tournament. Carney reached the 1,000-point milestone as a senior and was part of the winningest class in Cardinals’ history.
Meghan Cramb, Bishop Guertin (2014-17): Cramb helped lead the Cardinals to back-to-back championships, as Bishop Guertin went 41-2 over those two seasons. Was also named D1 Player of the Year as a senior and was a three-time D1 first-team all-state player. Is currently playing for the Assumption College women’s team.
Meghan Green, Bishop Guertin (2010-13): Green was a force for the Cardinals as a junior and senior, helping Bishop Guertin reach the D1 championship game each year and winning it all in 2012. A four-time D1 all-state performer, Green finished her high school career with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, the third player in state history to reach that milestone. Continued playing at Boston University.
Brooke Kane, Pinkerton (2016-19): Kane was a two-time Division I Player of the Year for the Astros and was named New Hampshire’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. She helped lead Pinkerton to the final four as a junior and senior, including a title-game appearance in 2018. Kane is a freshman for the University of New Hampshire women’s team.
Moriah Morton, Lebanon (2010-13): A 1,000-point scorer for the Raiders, Morton was also named Division II first-team twice and was the D2 Player of the Year as a senior. That year, she helped Lebanon go 24-0 and win the D2 title. Continued playing at Dartmouth College.
Aliza Simpson, Londonderry (2011-14): Simpson was a 1,000-point scorer for the Lancers and set a school record for assists while leading Londonderry to the final four three straight years. As a senior, she helped the Lancers win the Division I title, while also earning D1 and Gatorade Player of the Year honors. Is currently a member of the University of New Hampshire women’s team.
Madison Springfield, Conant (2012-15): Springfield was a 1,000-point scorer for Orioles, she was named New Hampshire’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. She also helped Conant win the D3 championship in 2015. Is currently a member of the Bentley University women’s team.
Libby Underwood, Portsmouth (2014-17): Underwood was a four-year varsity player for the Clippers and earned D2 first-team all-state honors three times. She graduated as the all-time leading scorer in Portsmouth’s program history. Is currently a member of the William & Mary College women’s team.
Jane White, Souhegan (2009-12): A 1,000-point scorer, White led Souhegan to back-to-back championships as a junior and senior, as the Sabers went 40-4. White was also named D2 first-team all-state three times and was the division player of the year as a senior. Continued playing at Bentley University and was a member of the 2013-14 Division II National Championship team.
Rebecca Wright, Lebanon (2017-20): Wright was a three-time D2 Player of the Year for the Raiders, helping them to a championship as a freshman and to the title game again as a senior. Wright topped the 1,000-point mark for her career as a junior and will continue playing at Southern New Hampshire University.

Top teams

2012 Souhegan: Tough to say that the Sabers’ second of back-to-back championship teams was the better of the two, especially when the first was undefeated. But this team flew under the radar because it lost four games during the regular season when Jane White missed time with an ankle injury. With White at full strength, Souhegan handed eventual-top seed Hollis Brookline its only regular-season loss and beat second-seeded Lebanon in the semifinals before handling Kearsarge in the final.
2012 Bishop Guertin: The Cardinals won the program’s first title with a 46-43 win over Londonderry and had some big moments along the way. None was bigger than snapping Winnacunnet’s 84-game winning streak, a game in which Meghan Green had 37 points and 23 rebounds.
2013 Bedford: The Bulldogs made the move up to D1 having never won a playoff game in D2, but Bedford lost just two games all year and pulled off the upset against defending-champion Bishop Guertin. Haley Driscoll scored with six seconds left to give the win to Bedford, which held its opponents to an average of 35 points in the playoffs.
2015 Coe-Brown: After coming up short in the final the year before, the Bears went undefeated on the way to the program’s first title since 2000. Behind Jennifer Schlim and Abby Ahearn, Coe-Brown took care of business against Pembroke in the semifinals before holding off underdog Goffstown in the final.
2015 Milford: The one team on the list that didn’t win a championship, the Spartans were in the midst of a resurgence after struggling for 20 years after the split with Souhegan. Milford reached the final four for the third year in a row, but ultimately, injuries exposed the team’s depth issues and the Spartans came up short.
2017 Bishop Guertin: The Cardinals finished the year by winning 19 games in a row, including a 52-49 win over Bedford in the final for the team’s second straight D1 title. The team was led by a solid senior class, including Meghan Cramb, that was supported by a freshmen class that has led Bishop Guertin to two more championships.
2018 Hollis Brookline: The Cavaliers had been to one championship game before the 2017, but after coming up short in the D2 final that year, HB was a favorite to return heading into the year. Despite losing their top scorer from the year before, the Cavs went 20-2, and were the only top seed in the final four before ending 13th-seeded John Stark’s storybook run in the final.
2019 Hanover: The Marauders dominated the rest of D2 on their way to a 21-1 record that included convincing wins in the semifinals over John Stark and the final over Kennett. Hanover had plenty of depth, led by senior Diana Schwarz and junior Maddie McCorkle, and used it to get up on teams early and outlast them to the finish.
2019 Bishop Guertin: The Cardinals’ fourth championship in a row was an undefeated title, which including four out-of-state wins and a 13-point victory over Portsmouth in the final. Bishop Guertin had just two games all season decided by 10 points or less.
